Board Game Review: Rummikub My parents, who are in their "young seventies" introduced my children to Rummikub on a recent visit.
We have been hooked ever since! The little ones can only play with the help of a grown up. However, my wife, my eleven year old, and I play more after they go to bed.
Rummikub (pronounced "rummy cube") is an excellent sequence, matching, logic game that is similar to gin rummy with tiles instead of cards.
My Last Recommendation: Rush Hour Each week I spend over 5 hours in my car commuting to work. Over one year, I will spend the equivalent of 4.2 days in my car driving to work. Aside from the occasional snow storm, my commute is fairly uneventful and offers little mental challenge. I recently received the game “Rush Hour” as a gift. It, unlike my commute, offers many challenges that can last from 5 minutes to half an hour. This puzzle game is great for people who like hands-on games and the challenge of testing his logical thinking ability.
You can think of it as a mental exercise similar to what your dad went through when he was parallel parking for the Fourth of July fireworks. |

Great Backyards don't just happen. It takes effort and planning. Check out this great site for outdoor games, furniture and more.

Croquet! It’s like golf, with no tee-times or slices. There’s also little waiting and the beer cart is your fridge. Sounds like a fun afternoon in the making.
A nice croquet set is something you will have for a long time, providing hours and hours of outdoor fun with the whole family.

Mother’s Day, I managed to pull off a great gift this year. The Wii Fit! Mother’s Day can be a stressful event for a dad. In the past I have tried my best to listen and learn what she would like as a gift. I have even fallen for the minimalist trap of “I don’t need anything”. Therefore, I ended up getting her way too little in the way of appreciative items. Of course, there was the year where I gave her giant-people shaped earnings that made her head look like it had been shrunk to half its size. It all went down like this. Around the time of her second or third mother’s day, we were at a gift store together. She was talking to the sales associate and commenting on these large artsy-people shaped earrings. She was being extremely complimentary about the earnings. My keen sense of observation made note of the interaction and I went back later that day to snap up the earrings before anyone else did. Hind site is truly 20-20! In reality what I should have observed was that my wife was being kind to the sales associate, who was expressing enthusiasm about the earrings. She is a kind person who likes to make people happy. And that is all I really want to do for her on Mother’s Day. Instead I managed to shrink her head two sizes. That was then! It’s been about 9 years since the earring incident and I would like to think I have learned a bit more. But I am also prepared to acknowledge that she practically hit me over the head with what she wanted this year. We saw an online commercial for Wii Fit. And she blurted out I want that! I want that now! I informed her that it didn’t come out until May. My little non-earring purchasing voice noted the timing was perfect for Mother’s Day. I bought it and she has loved and lived it ever since. She is enjoys the games, exercise, and progress reports. It was truly one of my shinning Mother’s Day moments. Finally, I knew it was perfect when it got my little guy off the couch to jog.
She loves absolutely loves it!
Thanks Nintendo
